Has Combe ever hosted an ‘official cultural ambassador’ before? Jally Kebba Susso came not just from London, but representing Gambia, backed by the venerable tradition of West African ‘griots’ (travelling musician/poets who take news, culture and traditional songs around the communities). The audience were gripped by his command of the 21-string kora, the African harp that is played with just the thumb and first two fingers of each hand. Songs both traditional and new, sometimes mournful, often joyful, delivered with a laid back style.
